This episode really pulls at the heartstrings. In ?Loving the Alien? we are left wondering why Annie has managed to take so many wrong decisions, acting out of sync with her character and profession. She is really giving fans cause to worry. When she jumps into the shower with Simon it is quite an eye opener erasing the notion of her inherent innocence. But then perhaps it is na?ve of us to expect innocence from a CIA agent.
She digs in her heels to continue her affair with Simon when she gets het marching orders from the DPD. She decides to go rogue and while Lena can naturally not authorise a holiday trip to Cuba she does help Annie get away and later lies about not knowing where she is!
Sad thing is that in the past Annie would have let Auggie know what all was happening in her life but not anymore. She just does not confide in him anymore. He is pained and it shows in the elevator scene where he clearly knows that she is lying. She also knows that he is not convinced. Will he be able to accept the lies when they are finally revealed? Annie is obviously taking a big chance in risking her professional relationships like this. One thing somehow does not gel. How is it that despite being put down by Lena, she still goes back to her for help leapfrogging over her direct boss.
Her feelings for Simon would seem to have affected her judgement. She is over the moon to find out that he has not found happiness with other women and their love making is passionate. But is it love or just lust for both of them? Either way it looks like a big risk which might well end her career. Particularly if Lena betrays her. Simon also has feelings for her and does not hesitate to kill in order to shelter Annie. He risks his life for her and now she may have to choose between him and her professional career.
Auggie meanwhile is still trying to find Jai?s killer. Auggie?s hunch proves correct and he is likely to find out a lot at Jai?s house. But the unravelling could still take some time. Also, Arthur gives up his wish to be the next Ambassador to China. He has faced many an inquisition in his time but now he prefers to save his pride even if it means losing his wish.
All in all, Covert Affairs has become more intense and explosive this season. Annie has risked ruining her relationships with Joan, Auggie and the CIA. She is in very real danger of being killed by Simon too. The situation has become too tense and there is bound to be some kind of a rupture. This will probably happen when the culprit behind Jai?s assassination is revealed.
