Golden Hawk Athletics & Recreation - This Week in Laurier Athletics

This Week in Laurier Athletics

WATERLOO, Ont. (September 5, 2012) - Welcome to the first edition of This Week in Laurier Athletics for the 2012-13 season. In this week's edition, we set up football's home opener against the No. 6 Queen's Gaels and examine the soccer teams as they prepare for their home openers on Wednesday night.?

FEATURED GAME: Football vs Queen's (Saturday, Sept. 8 - 8:00 p.m. - theScore)

After suffering a tough loss in their season opener on Monday night, the Golden Hawks return home to the friendly confines of Knight-Newbrough Field for their home opener against the No. 6 Queen's Gaels. Saturday's game marks an important turning point for the young team as the team will be going up against one of the early season favourites to capture this year's Yates Cup. However, Coach Gary Jeffries and the purple and gold have shown in recent years the ability to bounce back from tough starts, in particular last season when the team turned things around to post an impressive 51-16 win on Homecoming after suffering tough losses to Windsor, Queen's and Western.? One key to coming out with a win on Saturday will be the play on the Hawks defence. Coming off a solid performance against Toronto, the veteran group, led by the likes of Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.), Carlos Naranjo (Whitby, Ont.) and Alex Brouwers (Campbellford, Ont.), knows they will need to step up their game to another level against a powerful Queen's lineup. The Gaels boast running back Ryan Granberg, who led the CIS in rushing yards a year ago, as well as receiver Giovanni Aprile, who hurt the Hawks in both of their meetings last season. If Laurier can limit the production of those two players, it will go a long way in shutting down the Gaels offence. With another week of practice together, it can be expected that Laurier's offence will be much more in sync this week. Quarterback Travis Eman of Brampton, Ont., showed the ability to both run and throw the football against Toronto and if the receivers and running backs can turn their opportunities into big gains, it will make for a very competitive game Saturday night.
